Beatles: Eleanor Rigby (British, 1966)
Each Saturday or Sunday I'll post a non-classical selection. The truth is I don't know all that much about non-classical music; for the most part I'm betting my students might have something to teach ME in this regard. I certainly don't want to get into Beatles trivia, because I'll definitely lose that game. This is just an awesome song that happens to have violins--in fact it is orchestrated with a double string quartet, or "octet." I read somewhere that it is the only Beatles song in which none of them plays any instrument. That's about the extent of my Beatles trivia...
In May 2017 I challenged my students to practice every day for 30 days in a row. In addition, I asked them to listen to 30 bite-sized musical selections I emailed daily. I collected my picks in this blog for posterity. So these are works I find particularly fun, interesting, or important, including a handful by composers who were born or who died in May. Please enjoy!
